ABOUT CRISSI

Crissi Cochrane fashions a sultry, soulful brand of popular music, combining her Nova Scotian singer-songwriter roots with her love of jazz, retro pop, and classic soul.

Recording and performing artist Crissi Cochrane has earned her reputation as an independent artist to follow, beloved for her silky vocals, expert songwriting, and fierce musicianship. Her 2020 album Heirloom, funded by the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Windsor, features bold horns, lush back-up vocals, and a small orchestra, produced by Mike Hargreaves (The Walkervilles, Michou), with mix engineering by Juno-nominated engineer Brandon Unis (Karl Wolf, Nuela Charles). Hailed as the "voice of change" by the Windsor Star, the album is bold, fearless, and unapologetically modern: from dissecting unfulfilling relationships in "Hungry Love", to demanding respect in "Like A Lady", to banishing toxic influences in "Get Out".

Crissi grew up in New Minas, Nova Scotia, self-producing her first recordings and beginning her performance history at the tender age of 15. At eighteen, she moved to Halifax and began amassing career milestones - graduating with an award for Highest Academic Achievement from the Nova Scotia Community College’s Music Business program, receiving grant funding from the Province of Nova Scotia, recording her first studio album Darling, Darling (2010) in Chicago, and performing at numerous regional festivals, including the Halifax Pop Explosion.

One week after releasing Darling, Darling, Crissi boarded a train and relocated to Windsor, Ontario, after having visited in early 2010 and falling in love with the city’s vibrant downtown, the long summers, and the proximity to Detroit and numerous Ontario cities. Living just a stone’s throw away from the birthplace of Motown, Crissi’s music transformed, from darling folk/pop into sultry, jazzy soul, captured in her 2014 album Little Sway, funded by FACTOR and the Ontario Arts Council.

REVIEWS

“Cochrane’s [2014] album showcases a confident bridge towards sultry soul and classic, smoky jazz, the influence of Motown being just a riverbank away from Windsor. For fans of Ella Fitzgerald, Coeur de Pirate or Sarah Harmer.”

— Grant Lawrence, CBC Radio

“The hooks come big and strong, and Cochrane glows on top of it all. Punchy drums and cool-as-a-breeze horns take us back to three-minute pop glory. Motown is definitely in the air. At the core is delightful songwriting, with an appreciation of melodic love songs and sophisticated lyrics.”

— Bob Mersereau, CBC East Coast Music

“With a voice like sunshine, Crissi’s lyrics soar over a playful backdrop of brass, piano and (naturally) guitars. Sweet and welcoming, Crissi Cochrane is earning her place among Canada’s great pop singer/songwriters.”

— Steve Venegas, CBC Radio 3
