Thirteen atmospheric songs transport the listener amidst ongoing pandemic
Windsor, ONTARIO (November 13, 2020) – Channeling the natural world of flowing rivers, pouring rain, and distant shorelines, Dane Roberts's second full-length album Chasing Water unfurls its emotions like the temperamental Eastern sky – by turns brightly charming, hazily daydreaming, and storming with driving, soul-purifying rain.
These thirteen songs are the musical embodiment of wanderlust, detailing painterly scenes from his adventures across Europe and Canada, and bursting with a longing to be free that hits close to home during the ongoing pandemic. Even the most casual listener is transported on a journey through masterpiece landscapes, with “Eastern Sky” being inspired by a visit to the ancient city of Ephesus, the song “Boulders” recalling the landscapes in Delphi and the temple of Apollo, and “Wild Rose” taking influence from the bougainvillea flowers of Milos, Greece.
While Chasing Water was largely written during Dane's travels abroad, other songs tell stories closer to home – the title track, “Chasing Water”, is an homage to the natural beauty of Point Pelee National Park (where the artist was photographed by Travis Latam for the album's cover), and “Nowhere” conjures a vignette of a working man leaving the Chrysler plant on a scorching summer day, the essence of factory work and endless repetition.
“I actually set out to write a concept album about all of my travels, and somewhere along the way the songs slowly started becoming more and more personable, and less observational,” explains Dane. “Eventually, the album evolved into a sketch of familiar feelings in differing conditions and environments – ultimately unified by the desire for freedom.”
While most artists draw on outside producers to realize their songs on recording, Dane's expert self-production is prominent on Chasing Water. The steady drive of percussion and atmospheric guitars sweep the listener into soft, soothing beds of background vocals. While Chasing Water remains Dane's singular vision, it does feature back-up vocalist and Dane's significant other Madeline Doornaert, and mixing and mastering by Mike Hargreaves (Soul Brother Mike).
Dane plans to release a series of videos to bring the album to life for listeners, as the COVID-19 pandemic has altered plans for the album's release. “While we can't all be together, I'll do everything I can to make the experience of the album as accessible and personable as I can.”
Chasing Water, presented in partnership with Soul City Music Co-op, is available now on all streaming platforms and at danerobertsmusic.com.
