"Can We Go Back" Cover Revealed
Crissi Cochrane
Yesterday, I revealed the cover art for my upcoming single, “Can We Go Back”! The cover features photography by my good friend Dan Boshart (27th Floor Photography), with a dreamy pink Cadillac that was generously lent to us for the shoot by another good friend, Greg Goggin.
This photo was taken last summer, as part of a shoot for the cover of my album “Heirloom”. At that point in time, I wanted to name the album “Just Friends”, so we were creating a photo that told a bit of the story of that song (which you can read more about in my “The Meaning Of” series), recreating a kind of first-date vibe, as well as just getting as many photos as possible of me with this beautiful and famous car, which was part of the procession of pink Cadillacs at Aretha Franklin’s funeral.
We were still recording the album at that time, and in the weeks that followed, I realized that “Just Friends” didn’t really feel like it covered the full aesthetic of the album. Moreover, I didn’t think it was even one of my favourite tunes on the album, so I wasn’t sure how I felt about making it the title track. Finally, I decided to go back to “Heirloom”, an early name for the album that I had proposed back in 2016, and decided that it really fit the multi-faceted and raw nature of the record.
I felt bad about all the time and work that Dan and Greg had both put into this shoot, but I had faith that I’d be able to use these photos for something, someday.
When I was writing the lyrics for “Can We Go Back”, and really wishing I could just jump in the car and go for a drive and not have to think about bringing masks and hand sani and keeping the windows rolled up, I realized that I had the perfect photos to go along with the song - from the shoot with the pink Cadillac.
It ended up being fortuitous that I had these photos saved, since the pandemic makes it hard to do any kind of photo or video projects. It’s not impossible, but it’s a bit more complicated, and the extra anxiety of putting oneself (and others) at risk is almost always not worth it to me.
I especially love the look on my face in the photo we used for the cover. It looks both wistful, and kind of… wary. A little… tired. I think it really captures all the feelings of collective exhaustion that I touched upon in writing “Can We Go Back”. I can’t wait to finally share it - and the official music video - with you on Friday!
