Nominated!

Crissi Cochrane

I’m very pleased to have announced that I’ve been nominated for the 2020 Artist of the Year award from Biz X Magazine!

VOTE NOW >

This is a very prestigious local award, and the judging process relies on a few different factors - one of which is a public vote. I was overwhelmed yesterday by all of the kind comments I received on my Facebook post about the nomination, seeing so many of you were voting for me. Thank you! And thank you to my secret nominator, whoever you are!

You can vote once per device (computer, mobile, tablet, etc) between now at 5pm ET on Friday, September 25. So, lots of time to vote and spread the word!

There are actually very few awards to my name - I always get a surge of imposter syndrome whenever I’m described as “award-winning”, because I haven’t exactly won any traditional or particularly prestigious awards (though I am still immensely grateful for the ones I have received!). I was voted Favourite East Coast Solo Artist earlier this year in a Twitter poll tournament held by East Coast Rising, a radio show based in Nova Scotia, and I once won Solo Artist of the Year at CJAM 99.1fm in the first few years that I lived in Windsor.

And... that’s it. I’ve won grant funding, which is said to be “awarded”, but there are often many recipients, so it isn’t quite the same as a proper award. It’s a shame that there aren’t more music industry associations in Ontario, or Southern Ontario, that would exist and bestow awards - we have what is considered the country’s biggest music industry hub in Toronto, but still no regional MIA, no regional or provincial awards (outside the genres of Folk and Country) to dream of one day receiving. There is a new provincial MIA, Music Ontario, but it doesn’t give awards, though my fingers are crossed that they one day might. Had I stayed out East, I would have aimed to score a nomination at the East Coast Music Awards or the Music Nova Scotia Awards, though my life and music would have been so different that it’s pointless to even imagine what I’d be receiving those awards for. These days, my goal is to try and score a JUNO nomination, which is an incredibly steep hill to try and climb, but it’s good to have some dreams, right? (It isn’t even an award-dream, just a nomination-dream!)

Before I sign off, I’d just like to share that I am the featured local artist this weekend in Windsor on the commercial FM radio station Mix 96.7. “Can We Go Back” is their Homegrown Hit, and will be aired on their countdown from 6-8pm on Saturday, and 1-3pm on Sunday. They also conducted an interview with me one morning last month, which is up now as a short article and an audio clip.

Okay, that’s it! I’ll be back again soon with another “Meaning Of” post all about my song “Everything” from my album Heirloom, and then I’ll be live-streaming next on Saturday, September 26. Special note that I’m pretty certain that I’ll be doing this stream over on my own artist page instead of on the Soul City page. I just wanted to switch things up for a night, and see if those tricksy Facebook algorithms will allow some more of my followers to find and enjoy the stream live.
