New Collaboration: This Love
Crissi Cochrane
Today, my husband’s latest album is officially out! Headspace is a stunning ten-song contribution to the landscape of Canadian indie soul, and it sets the bar high for what an independent artist is capable of, featuring writing, arranging, producing, mixing and mastering all by Soul Brother Mike.
I am - naturally - biased when it comes to my husband’s work, but it’s undeniably brilliant how he employs his two decades of songwriting experience to tastefully embed really important messages in his work, gently opening the door to some really necessary “thought journeys” for listeners. On this album, which is thematically based around the introspection of the pandemic life, he delves into our place in the universe, our disconnection from the natural world, how to overcome our political differences, cutting through head fog, and reconnecting with our loves. And the fact that he does all of this with such a nuanced and creative ear for production - that’s what really sets the bar so high. It’s incredible to have an alignment of so many skill sets in one person, and it’s incredible to watch him continue manifesting his own singular creative vision with what seems like an inexhaustible wellspring of inspiration.
I’m honoured to have snagged a spot as the featured vocalist singing a duet on the album’s closing track, “This Love”. It’s an incredibly romantic and poetic ballad, almost like a Pablo Neruda poem or a wedding song (reminiscent, to me, of Daniel Caesar’s “Best Part”), and I loved the challenge of matching my voice exactly to his, trying to match his phrasing as identically as possible, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. It feels like a perfect way to close out this album of self-analysis and introspection: gratefully coming home to the one you love.
You can find “This Love” and all of Headspace now on all streaming platforms, or you can do the thing that really supports an independent artist and buy the album directly from his website, where you can find it as a digital download AND on a signed CD (that will be stuck in an envelope and addressed to you by yours truly!).
Or, you can simply help spread the word by sharing a link to the album on social media, or giving a “Like” or a comment on any posts about Headspace that you happen to come across. Those little actions go a long way in helping out independent artists 💗
