"Hit The Road Jack ft. Crissi Cochrane" by Jose Biggs OUT TODAY!
Crissi Cochrane
I got to be the featured artist on this SUPER cool take on the classic Ray Charles song, “Hit The Road Jack”, with Chilean R&B/soul artist, Jose Biggs. The song is moody, modern, and Latin-infused. You can find it on all streaming platforms now.
LISTEN TO “HIT THE ROAD JACK”
I originally recorded this song twice. The first time, I didn’t have my headphone mix quite right, and I ended up actually singing all of my melodies a bit late - they were too far behind the beat. When Jose pointed it out and asked me if I meant to do that, of course I said “NO!” and I went back to the studio to make it tight and make it right.
The great thing about re-doing a work when you’ve accidentally screwed up is that I often find that I do it much better the second time around. The first time I did it, I had all this fiery passion, singing my parts like I was really angry at this person that I was telling to “hit the road”. The second time, I decided to lay back and be more laissez-faire about it - like I’m so totally over this person that I can barely even be bothered to summon the energy to speak to them at all. And it ended up being so much more listenable and magical that way.
It reminds me of something Brendan Scott Friel said to me recently about his vocal production style. Rather than putting too much heart and soul into a vocal performance, sometimes you need to let the vocal sort of be a mannequin, and let the listener put their own face on it. The more that you dig it and make it unique, it almost takes the listener out of it. I love that I ended up coming to the same conclusion in working on this song (just, as usual, Brendan puts it in nicer words).
Hope you enjoy this tune! Add it to your summer playlists! Share it with your friends! Give it a like, or a heart, or a re-post, or whatever it is you do when you like something! Haha. Thanks to all who do this!
Hope you’re having a great summer,
Crissi
PS - I made a really sweet video for Patreon last night! It’s a little tour of my grown-up calm corner, where I go to chill out. In the video I share some of my favourite little aphorisms, a mini craft project, a cute design feature in a bunch of rooms in our house (fairy doors!), a book that helps me relax, and my favourite oracle cards deck, plus a lot of general silllyness. ALSO this month I’m sharing just for patrons a mini-book of poetry! Really excited about these offerings. You can get in on this little club for as little as $5 a month, and it helps me put food on the table during this time where I can’t really work (motherhood + musicianship = very tricky work/life balance, mostly am focusing on the kids these days since I think it’s most important that I don’t screw them up!). Also you can cancel anytime, no hard feelings. DO IT!
