First Livestream Concert this Saturday

Crissi Cochrane

I’m very excited to be doing my first live-streaming concert tomorrow night on Soul City TV!

Mike has successfully done two live-streaming concerts thus far, with me behind the board producing the show. It’s a lot of fun to be behind-the-scenes and hanging out in the Facebook chat, but I’m excited to spend some time in front of the camera. I’ll be playing an hour of originals at 9PM ET through the Soul City Music Co-op Facebook page.

With each concert, we hope to raise $50. We’ve set up a viewing page on the Soul City website, where you can watch the stream and donate: soulcitymusiccoop.com/tv

Next Thursday, I’ll be doing another stream at 9PM ET of my favourite jazz standards and classic cover songs (that sound jazzy when I do ‘em). I think I might be more excited for that one! Tune in and catch both of them if you can!

So, how are you managing in this crazy time? All I see on Facebook are memes and utterly terrifying headlines - I wish I could hear from people about how they actually feel. This is forever changing the world, changing us. But I get it: we are held fast in the thick of things, heads down, handling one day at a time. We probably all feel varying degrees of afraid and unsure, and I can’t say if amplifying those feelings would help or hurt.

Because we have a toddler, our lives haven’t wandered far from the old routine. It’s harder to entertain her without outings, and I worry about the lack of socializing, but I’m SO glad that we have a backyard. We lived in an apartment without even so much as a balcony for ten years, so I feel very blessed that we can go outside.

Mike’s asthma puts him at higher risk than the general population, and it looks like even the general population isn’t exactly low-risk right now either, so we are being very careful. We had a bit of a situation on our hands last weekend when our fridge died, but a local company saved the day, texting me photos of what they had in stock, delivering the new fridge to our porch and removing the old one from there (at my request, to keep people out of the house). We lost a lot of food, however, and decimated our pantry. We’ve been using the pick-up and delivery options at local grocery stores, but couldn’t get a time slot any earlier than 5 days after the new fridge came in. We had a couple days of being very grateful that I am very creative and resourceful in the kitchen, or else it would have been noodles for every meal.

Yesterday, I ventured out for groceries, finally giving up on the pick-up and delivery stores, since they are consistently sold out of 80% of my items by the time our order comes up. The whole process took 3 hours: shopping for a months’ worth of food and then disinfecting it all. I was embarrassed, pushing around an overloaded grocery cart, and taking at least 10 minutes just to bag everything up at the check-out. But there’s a very stressful disharmony: on the face of things, the whole world still LOOKS normal in the grocery store - but it isn’t. Thinking back, I realized that I didn’t see one clerk working who looked to be over the age of 30.

At any rate, we’re holding up, and just trying not to worry. We are bracing ourselves for the long haul. Some estimates say that the virus might go around until the spring of next year. We’re lucky to be introverts to begin with, and I’m sure there are lots of kids who grow up in isolation and turn out just fine. I have lots of little projects to pick away at - lots of blank canvases, blog posts I want to write, things I could knit and sew, recipes to try without yeast and eggs since those things are out-of-stock everywhere - and very few hours in which to do them. Only for a few minutes do I wish I had the luxury of being bored. I think I’d prefer keeping busy with a toddler, moving through each day with a routine, and not having too much idleness to worry more than I already do.

Anyway…

For me, performing is perfect release from the troubles of my daily life. So many of my musician friends are doing live-streams, and I know it isn’t just because we need the donations or the shares, but because we need to do this for our own sanity. I’m really looking forward to that mental clarity that comes from being the music, and bringing that aura of calm to my world again when it’s all done. Tune in and I hope I can do the same for you. ❤️
