“Can We Go Back”: Postponed

Crissi Cochrane

After much thought, I have decided to postpone the release of my upcoming single, “Can We Go Back”, which was originally scheduled for release on July 17.

I am so grateful that the Black Lives Matter movement has been rightly dominating public discourse and consciousness lately. As an artist and millennial, I have always gravitated to good, progressive people. Every day on social media, I am glad that at least 90% of the content my friends share is about dismantling systemic racism and inequality, condemning police brutality, and calling out injustice. I have been silent only because I have felt that it would be preaching to the choir, and that, as a white woman, I should not be taking up valuable space. However, I will say it now for anyone who somehow still doesn’t get it, or for anyone foolish enough to think that an artist like myself could be anything but progressive: Black lives matter.

I’ve been especially worried about “Can We Go Back“ sending the wrong message. I wrote this song about longing for an end to the stresses of pandemic life, and feeling nostalgia for an easier, earlier time, but I have consulted with my activist friends, and feel that there is unfortunately plenty of room for this song to be misinterpreted. I would never want to go back to the time before the BLM movement gained this awesome momentum, and I would be devastated if anyone took that message from the song. And so, it will not be coming out as planned on July 17. I’m hoping it may come out in early September, and will be thinking on possible ways to change the lyrics to avoid any misunderstanding.

In the meantime, my scheduled release of the “Only You & Me” remix will still be going forward on June 26, and I’ll be returning to live-streaming again on June 20, and continuing to seek for the right balance musically between providing you songs to help you escape your worries, and using my platform to promote positive change. I’m going to keep supporting all my strong activist friends, signing petitions, making donations, doing all I can, and I hope you will too.
