It’s Saturday night! I just finished my 18th live-stream over on Facebook. I’m pretty excited to take off my makeup soon and curl up with the book I’ve been devouring (“The English Wife” by Lauren Willig).

I had a lovely time, as usual! Tonight I actually felt a bit more disconnected from the audience than I usually do. I’d love to rig up a way of seeing the comments come in, so that I can read them on the air and have more interaction with people watching. I know that when I’m watching my brother on Twitch, I love commenting and hoping that he’ll see my comment and read it on-air and that I get to have that moment of connection with him.

Tonight, I did a little show and tell with a piece of fan art that was mailed to me by Bianca Lee from South Korea several years back. And I played my ukulele publicly for the first time ever! I’ve always wanted to get it fitted with some hardware so that I could plug it in and play it live (since I find mic’ing acoustic instruments a bit tedious), but it’s a really badly made ukulele and the neck is cracking away from the body, so I haven’t bothered investing in upgrading it. At any rate, it was super fun playing “The Key” from my 2014 album Little Sway, and executing a version of “Sweet Someone”, a popular Hawaiian song.

SET LIST:

4:51 - Sweet & Fine
9:36 - Like A Lady
14:39 - Something We Did

36:40 - The Key (ukulele!)
42:26 - Sweet Someone (ukulele!)
48:19 - For Always
52:32 - On The Dance Floor
1:02:40 - The Way You Move
1:08:09 - Muddy Water (Madeline Doornaert cover)

I found this green shirt up in the attic and thought it might be cute on stream, but it’s not as nice as I hoped it’d be... It’s honestly been a bit of a struggle to find wardrobe for these streams because all of my “show clothes” have been based on me standing up to perform, and they aren’t as flattering when I’m sitting down. For years, I have never sat down to perform publicly - I feel I look and sound better standing up, and I also command more attention that way - but in our basement studio, the ceilings are too low for me to stand. (We did a video shoot recently where I had to stand up and sing, and it actually feels foreign to me now.)

So, I need new flattering clothes for sitting down! But I find it really hard (and expensive) to shop online because I’m extremely picky about how things fit, and I don’t love all the emissions expended shipping these orders around the world. Prior to the pandemic, I did most of my shopping in second-hand stores, in the interest of creating less waste and saving money, but as we enter a massive second-wave of COVID-19 cases, a second-hand store seems like one of the worst places to visit. At least, a small part of me is extremely proud to have only bought two articles of clothing for myself this entire year so far.
