The most fun part - and definitely one of my highlights from all of my livestreams ever - was when I did my show and tell with my beautiful hat from The Saucy Milliner. Upon opening the hat box for the first time in years, I discovered that I had hidden a stash of cigarettes in there!!

On Saturday, I played for the first time ever on Instagram Live! It was a special night - a pyjama party theme, a show-and-tell segment featuring Adeila’s first song “Bumblebee” (so cute, I die), and our first time filming in portrait mode, where you can actually see all of me!

Tonight, I did a little show and tell with a piece of fan art that was mailed to me by Bianca Lee from South Korea several years back. And I played my ukulele publicly for the first time ever!

It’s Saturday night, and I am currently winding down from what was one of my very favourite ever live-stream performances! I felt like this one was so much fun, and there were so many novel aspects and things we did right (show & tell! wine! rihanna!) that I will be sure to bring back for future streams.

I also debuted a brand-new song on stream, a song that I’m tentatively calling “Why”. I’m really relieved to finally be writing new songs again. This song definitely feels like me, but it still feels like something a bit more creative and unexpected, which is the direction I’d like to go. I wrote the chorus a week or two ago, and then I decided to write verses inspired by the book “The Shoemaker’s Wife” by Adriana Trigiani that I finished reading at the end of July.

Saturday night’s live-stream was my ninth stream since we began Soul City TV back in March, and it was an extra special one, being the one officially funded by the City of Windsor’s Arts, Culture, and Heritage Fund. To mark the occasion, I added two new tunes to the repertoire - my upcoming single “Can We Go Back”, and a new custom love song, “Love The Way You Love Me” - and I dusted off my cover of Feist’s “One Evening”, which I haven’t played in years.

I’m pleased to say that I did my hair and makeup with zero cursing tonight (a rare thing), and I didn’t try on five different outfits and almost cry off all my make-up 10 minutes before going live (a very common thing). I feel a renewed sense of connection with these songs and these people now. I think all this love was exactly what I needed today.

It’s been a strange evening. We nearly had to delay the live-stream because we were dealing with a small family “crisis” this evening, and I didn’t get to do my make-up/hair until 30 minutes before we went live. The crisis: Adeila wedged a raisin up her nose, and we can’t get it out. So a lot of the stream banter was about us soliciting for tips and tricks on removing the raisin.

It took quite a few hours of practice this week to get them all up to scratch. I played Elliott Smith, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse, The Beatles, Etta James, Sam Cooke, and a few jazz standards. I also included “I Will Survive,” the first song that I’ve learned in ages.

It was so exciting - and nerve-wracking - to play so many songs that I don’t normally play, and to play them for the people they’re about. I’m looking forward to doing another one of these soon, since there are dozens of songs that didn’t make it into this show.

I’ve been getting into the rhythm of carving out time to practice for these gigs, in a way I didn’t do when I was playing public shows. I was often playing background music gigs that require little to no practice - which is convenient because I only have about 2-3 hours of child-free time in which to get work done. But these gigs have excellent, clear audio, and they remain up on Facebook long after the show is over, so this is both a challenge and a great opportunity to capture what I do, so long as I’m ready! Which means… practice!
