“The Way You Move”
Crissi Cochrane
“The Way You Move” is my 65th (!!) custom love song, and my third fully-produced custom song. This was written to celebrate the 30th birthday of a lovely woman named Amanda, on behalf of her husband Darryl.
One of the questions I ask is this: “Imagine, in your day to day life, the moments when this person looks the most beautiful. What are they doing?”
Darryl replied, “She is the most beautiful when she gets passionate about a subject. Her eyes light up and her hands move faster and faster as she’s speaking. The energy just radiates from her.”
And that became the inspiration for the chorus of the song.
Musically, in writing this song, I was actually drawing a little bit on “Sunshine Of My Life” by Stevie Wonder, with the verses being a very similar chord progression, just slowed down. I love how the production makes the post-chorus (where I repeat “something in the way you move”) feel almost like a track by the Weeknd.
I just started offering fully-produced custom songs this year. Once I finish my basic guitar and vocal recording, I hand it off to my husband, Mike Hargreaves, to add everything else: bass, drums, synths, lead guitar, whatever his heart desires. I love the way he captured Amanda’s mystique in this song.
I almost can’t believe it: 65 songs!! That’s more than 6 albums! I would have never believed that this aspect of my work would keep on going and going.
When I started doing these custom songs in 2016, I worried that maybe I would “run out” of songs. But no! With each tune I write, I feel like I’m instead opening more worlds of musical possibilities.
And I love the puzzle that each song presents: how to take all the pieces of someone’s story and shape it into the very best song that I possibly can.
Someday, I’m going to release an album of my favourite custom love songs. I have a feeling that this one will be on it!
