Making a New Record
Crissi Cochrane
You can tell that I finally mean it when I say “my album is coming out in the new year” when it’s October and I’m still saying it.
I’m so excited about this record. I feel like I’ve heard so much different music, from so many different time periods, and I haven’t heard anything that sounds like this.
It’s a very ambitious record - horns, strings, keys, back-up singers; the list of people who’ve played on it is currently at 14 people, and most of them are on every single track. It’s so lush, sometimes I need to take several listens because my attention is so focused on the beauty of one instrument, and then I need to go back and focus on the magic of another. Most of these songs have about 30 different parts, on average (though a lot of those are percussion - so many different kinds of percussion).
My husband is producing the album, engineering the sessions, arranging the parts, and updating our insane work chart with what parts are done, and what parts are left. It’s been slowly transforming from red to green. We are officially in the home stretch!
