I love being a guest vocalist on recordings. It allows me to align myself with other musicians, become a part of their stories. I’ve very much internalized the pace of social media, always demanding new content, and these little collaborations are one of the ways I like to remain current, between releases of my own.

Recently, there have been some lovely media pieces about Heirloom that I’d like to share with you! First up was The Windsor Star’s second-page full-colour article with new photos of me, with the headline: Voice Of Change. DAMN. How good does that sound!? I think it’s both the greatest headline and the greatest-looking article I’ve had in my career so far.

We did it! I feel so grateful, honoured, and - honestly - relieved that my vinyl pre-order reached 100 units on Monday night! It actually went over the top, currently sitting pretty at 112/100 units pre-ordered. Which means our crowd-funding campaign is a success, and our vinyls will be pressed!

Tomorrow, or soon after, I will make a more sensible blog post, that tells you all the sterile bullet points about what to consume and how, but today, I just wanted to use my words to capture some of yesterday. I can barely remember a thing about my last album release show, and I really want to remember this one.

It’s just after midnight, and at this time tomorrow night, I’ll be playing my final songs at the Heirloom release show, at long last. I’ve been imagining this show for so long, so caught up in my head about it, that it feels as if I’ve already played it three times over, start to finish.

It was a really emotionally intense couple of days preparing for these interviews, doing them, and then watching/reading/listening to them as they came out. I’ve been steadily doing interviews to promote the new album, so it’s been really strange to be suddenly looking backward on a really negative chapter of my life when I’m on the cusp of a big milestone.

At the end of this month, I’ll be filming my eighth music video. This time around, 19-year-old me is decidedly not in the room - especially since “the room” in question is “the gym”. She has been replaced - and not by someone who engages in disordered eating, but by someone who long ago decided to respect the body that carries her through this life.

There’s a special magic in playing with voices you’ve never before. It takes you out of what you’re doing, makes it especially challenging to continue playing and singing, and not falling headlong into focus on all the lovely little parts coming to life around you. I felt that even yesterday, hearing all the vignettes of the album manifest.

I check the clock - it’s almost 11PM. My contact lenses are dry on my eyes and I’m pulling my headphones off my head. After so many extensive, attentive listens - and god, they are hard to come by with a toddler in the house - I think we are finally ready to call this album complete.

I’ve written poetry in some form or other since I was very young, but I very rarely share it. Maybe, as a songwriter, I prefer having music behind my words, to create an atmosphere of feeling… but sometimes, those words can become lost. I still hold onto a quiet wish that someday, I might get to see some of my poems in a tiny book.

Our chat created a lovely little six-minute radio segment that played before the world premiere of ‘Hungry Love’ on CBC on Monday, January 6. I tuned in with my family and my daughter danced SO hard when the song played.

When I moved to Halifax at 18, I pared down my belongings to the absolute minimum. At that point, I stopped owning all physical music media - I left behind all my mixtapes, my CD collection, and my vintage vinyls.

I am insanely excited about this. I’ve always wanted to have my music on vinyl, but I’ve never been able to manage the steep upfront cost of vinyl records, and they’re also very difficult and expensive to ship.

If the role of a co-op seems ambiguous, think of us like a sort of record label, except the artists are the staff, we exist as a non-profit, and none of us artists relinquish any percentage of our ownership of our work. Essentially, we’re a collective of artists who are sharing our skills with one another, and lifting as we grow.

I’ve become the voracious reader that I was as a child, when I would often bring home the maximum number of books allowed from the library. This year I read, on average, one book per week.

That’s the thing about preserving your words through the years - these little vignettes and observations remind me where I come from, and, in the words of Elliott Smith, the people I’ve been before. It’s nice to sit with them, every now and then, and hear the (sometimes strange) things they have to say.

While our decorations are few, they are mighty! Most of them are handmade, either because they were something special we could make with our tiny human (ornaments, stocking holders), or because I just preferred the things I could make myself (embroidered stockings).

It stuns me that, ten years ago, I was already recording in a world-class studio on someone else’s dollar, having my songs tenderly produced by someone brilliant who was willing to spend seven 12-hour days in a row in the studio with 20-year-old me, and working with one of my musical heroes.
