"Can We Go Back" Single + Music Video OUT NOW!

Crissi Cochrane

It is my great pride and joy to finally announce that my pandemic-inspired single, “Can We Go Back”, is now available on all major streaming platforms, and the music video is officially out now on YouTube! I’m excited to share with you some more about the way I approached writing this song, and how happy I am that I was able to create a music video at home with my husband as the director.

REPLAY: Crissi Cochrane on Facebook Live, August 8, 2020

I also debuted a brand-new song on stream, a song that I’m tentatively calling “Why”. I’m really relieved to finally be writing new songs again. This song definitely feels like me, but it still feels like something a bit more creative and unexpected, which is the direction I’d like to go. I wrote the chorus a week or two ago, and then I decided to write verses inspired by the book “The Shoemaker’s Wife” by Adriana Trigiani that I finished reading at the end of July.

The Meaning Of: JUST FRIENDS

Crissi Cochrane

I was smitten, but I don’t think he ever actually called me his girlfriend - what we had was undefined. Mutual friends were always telling me they’d seen him somewhere with someone else, but I was mostly too infatuated to give up on him (and all this drama provided such great inspiration for my angsty poetry).

Stream it now: Crissi Cochrane for Bluesfest Windsor

Crissi Cochrane

At the start of the month, Jeff Burrows reached out to us to see if Mike, myself, and two other artists from the Soul City Music Co-op - Madeline Doornaert and Dane Roberts - would be willing to record some live performances for the Bluesfest’s Yunity Front Porch Party series. Of course, we were completely honoured and thrilled to be invited to collaborate with a massive, beloved local festival, and quickly agreed.

WPL Presents ArtWorks: Crissi Cochrane

Crissi Cochrane

I decided to share a song from each of my past three releases, so I opened with “And Still We Move” from Little Sway, followed by “Only You & Me” from Heirloom, and finishing with “Drive All Night” from Pretty Alright. The library invited me to share some book recommendations so I divulged some of my favourite writers and favourite kinds of books to read at the end of the video, and talked about how reading is keeping me sane during the pandemic!

Vinyl At My Door!

Crissi Cochrane

As soon as we got the album and put it on the turntable, Adeila was clambering onto my lap asking me to dance with her. Mike and I took turns bouncing and singing with her until we collapsed, sweaty and exhausted, for the three-song denouement on the B side (Everything, Heaven, Midnight Wind).

Thanks so much to all who joined tonight’s live-stream! I had such a lovely time connecting with you, and sharing some tunes that I don’t play as often. I debuted “One World Or None” on the stream tonight, a tune of mine written a few years ago that I haven’t played in ages, but still really adore. And I especially had fun singing ‘I Heard Love Is Blind”, and testing out my new re-worded Sam Cooke cover which is now called “The Mystic”.

The Meaning Of: SOMETHING WE DID

Crissi Cochrane

I think that was the only time I ever felt just the slightest regret for not having subscribed to the puritanical idea of “saving oneself for marriage”. Because you do give a little piece of yourself away to your old lovers, even if it’s a piece you don’t miss, or one that you replace.

Darling, Darling & Pretty Alright up in the Shop

Crissi Cochrane

Shortly after I released Little Sway, I started trying to sweep my earlier, folk-tinged releases under the rug. I had them removed from all major digital platforms, and I think I even went so far as to go around YouTube and submit takedown requests for videos that used my music from those earlier days, hoping that, should anyone look me up, they’d find only the latest and greatest. But since then, I’m feeling much less insecure about my body of work, and really happy with the growth and progress that my discography makes plain.

Marc has been a tremendous supporter of our music community, and he always asks thought-provoking questions that make me realize new things about myself and the things that I do. I really enjoyed sharing some thoughts with him - and hearing Mike’s thoughts too - about our transition into regular live-streaming entertainment.

I felt like I had that bright, nervous energy that I’d get from performing in-person shows. I love trying to control and harness that great thrill. And I was just so happy to get dolled up - I haven’t worn my hair in a donut bun yet on stream, and I used a super cool magnetic eyeliner and eyelashes combo that I didn’t even know existed until my trip to the drug store on Friday.

CBC Interview on my own front porch

Crissi Cochrane

I was asked to talk about how my album has been received during the pandemic. I could never have foreseen how my year would change, going into lockdown just two weeks after releasing the album. But this album is not unsuited to these times: it comes from a place of strength, resilience, and reflection, all things that are pretty valuable right now.
